At the Bench

Consuelo Sauceda is a San Diego native earning her BS in Biochemistry from neighboring institution, California State University San Marcos (CSUM). As a NIGMS-RISE scholar, she conducted undergraduate thesis studies on the identification of secondary metabolites against Mycobacterium marinum using analytical technologies such as ¹H NMR. During this time, she completed two summer internships- one at the University of Colorado, Denver the Anschutz Medical Campus, and the other at her now alma mater, the University of California, San Diego, focused on cellular signaling in Type II Diabetes and breast cancer models, respectively. Thereafter, she acquired a position as a Research Associate II in the laboratory of Drs. Nicholas Webster and interventional radiologist Isabel Gala Newton. Here, she performed preclinical studies focused on liver and breast cancer intervention studies. After completing 4 years in the lab, she gained entrance into UC San Diego’s Biomedical Sciences (BMS) program and joined the laboratory of Dr. David J Gonzalez within the School of Medicine.

Outside of Lab

Consuelo enjoys taking dance classes and, when the weather and waves permit, snorkeling around La Jolla Cove. One of Consuelo’s side hobbies all entail being a foodie, so exploring the food cuisine around San Diego (Convoy, specifically) are a must.
