May 31, 2024 | UC San DiegoRefugee Health Unit Partners Participate in Annual Global Women’s Health Grand RoundsRefugee Health Unit coordinated community participation in the UC San Diego Health Annual Global Women’s Health Grand Rounds: Women and Adolescent Health in San Diego Refugee and Immigrant Communities. Five panelists represented their respective communities in an interactive session: Rand Alubaidi, a Middle Eastern Refugees Specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego; Jamat Suryan, Senior Prenatal Navigator at Global Communities; Hsihsa Thaw, Community Program Manager at the Karen Organization of San Diego; Josianne Valsaint, Community Health Worker at Haitian Bridge Alliance, Child Birth Educator and Lactation Consultant, and Prenatal Navigator with Global Communities; and Dr. Sarah Yousofzai, an Internal Medicine Graduate and OBYN. Panelists shared their experiences working with refugee and immigrant communities from the Middle East, East Africa, Afghanistan, Burma, and Haiti. In a panel moderated by Dr. Janine Young, Professor of Pediatrics and Dr. Sarah Averbach, Associate Professor in the OBGYN and Reproductive Sciences Department, community experts discussed some of the common barriers that community members face when seeking clinical care. April 20, 2021 | American Academy of PediatricsCONGRATULATIONS TO EYLA BOIES, MD, FAAP, FABMThe American Academy of Pediatrics, California Chapter 3 (AAP-CA3) is pleased to award the 2020 Bronwen Anders Pediatrician of the Year to Eyla Boies, MD, FAAP, FABM. Dr. Boies is a general pediatrician at UCSD where she teaches and mentors residents and students in offices in La Jolla and on Frost Street. Her area of expertise lies in the field of breastfeeding medicine with an emphasis on helping the preterm infant and mother after discharge with the challenges of breastfeeding and lactation. In 2008 she established and continues to serve as Medical Director of the Premature Infant Nutrition Clinic (PINC) where she has seen over 1,200 mothers and infants. She is co-author of Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Protocol #10, Breastfeeding the Late Preterm and Early Term Infant. She has been a member of the board of directors of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (an international organization of physicians of different specialties whose mission is to support and advocate breastfeeding based on evidence) for seven years and is currently serving as secretary. November 19, 2020 | UC San Diego News CenterUNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA HEALTH AND UC SAN DIEGO LAUNCH ONLY ACCREDITED MILK BANK IN SOUTHWESTUniversity of California Health (UCH) and University of California San Diego Health (UC San Diego Health) have launched a nonprofit human milk bank to serve families in Southern California and statewide through all six UCH academic health centers. The new facility represents one of the first groundbreaking partnerships between a blood bank and a human milk bank. The University of California Health Milk Bank, the first milk bank located in San Diego, is the only Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) accredited milk bank in Southern California, and only one of 30 nonprofit milk banks in North America. |
