About Us
Our division is comprised of three main sections: Academic General Pediatrics (AGP), Academic Newborn Medicine (NBM), and Academic Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP), all housed within the UCSD School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics.
AGP and NBM faculty all complete 4 years of medical school, 3 years of pediatric residency, and many have completed further advanced degrees and training beyond residency.
DBP faculty have 3 years of sub-specialty training post-three year pediatric residency and evaluate, treat, and coordinate care for children and adolescents with developmental delays, behavioral issues, and learning disorders.
UC San Diego School of Medicine Academic General Pediatrics faculty:
- Direct and staff 2 UC San Diego School of Medicine general pediatric teaching clinics (in Kearny Mesa at 7910 Frost Street and in La Jolla at 8910 Villa La Jolla Drive, housed in the UCSD Health building)
- The Kearny Mesa/Frost St. site also has:
- The UC San Diego Academic General Pediatrics/Rady Children's Hospital Special Needs Clinic (providing expert care to children with complex medical needs)
- The UC San Diego Academic Developmental-Behavioral Clinic (see below) --*Note: AGP and DBP faculty often share patients, provide on-site consults, and each group prioritizes each section's patients for appointments
- International Travel clinic appointments
- breast feeding support for medically complex newborns
- The Kearny Mesa/Frost St. site also has:
- Provide expert pediatric clinical faculty UCSD resident teaching for 2 federally qualified health center clinic sites at Family Health Centers of San Diego (City Heights and El Cajon locations)
- Providers at these sites specialize in Immigrant and Refugee Health and teach UCSD School of Medicine residents, medical students and family medicine residents from the Family Health Centers of San Diego Residency Program
- the Pediatric HIV Clinic at UC San Diego Health
- Providers specialize in the care of infants and children affected by HIV
UC San Diego Academic Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics faculty direct and/or staff:
- The UC San Diego Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic is co-located at the UC San Diego Academic General Pediatrics Kearny Mesa/Frost St. site (see above) -- Note: AGP and DBP faculty often share patients, provide on-site consults, and each group prioritizes each section's patients for appointments.
- A federally qualified health center clinic site, San Ysidro Health and provide bilingual DBP services to children
- UC San Diego Health High Risk Infant Follow-up Clinic
- UCSD DBP sub-specialty faculty are contracted by UCSD Health to direct this clinic and provide follow-up care for medically complex newborns, including premature infants post-hospital discharge
- Rady Children's Hospital Down Syndrome Clinic
- UCSD DBP sub-specialty faculty are contracted by Rady Children's Hospital to direct all services related to developmental and behavioral supports and evaluations for children with Down Syndrome
- Rady Children's Hospital Turner Syndrome Clinic
- UCSD DBP sub-specialty faculty are contracted by Rady Children’s Hospital to provide expert services related to developmental and behavioral needs and evaluations for children with Turner Syndrome
- Rady Children's Hospital Kids Start Clinic
- UCSD DBP sub-specialty faculty are contracted by Rady Children’s Hospital to provide expert services related to developmental and behavioral needs and evaluations for children under 6 years old with complex needs.
- The San Diego Regional Center
- UCSD DBP faculty are contracted to provide expert services related to developmental and behavioral needs and evaluations for infants and children through age 18 years.
UC San Diego School of Medicine Academic Newborn Medicine faculty:

- Direct medical care received for newborns at UCSD Health Jacobs Medical Center
- Provide expert newborn medical care at the UCSD Health Jacobs Medical Center campus
- Provide prenatal consultations, as requested
- Direct Pediatric Quality Improvement at UCSD Health
- Oversee teaching newborn medicine to UCSD School of Medicine pediatric and med-peds residents and medical students
- Maintain UCSD Health’s Baby Friendly status
- Provide expert support for breastfeeding
