Visiting Senior Student Scholarship Program for the Department of Pediatrics

Fourth-year medical students from U.S. schools may choose to take an away rotation at UC San Diego School of Medicine, especially if they are interested in learning more about our UC San Diego Pediatric Residency program. The Visiting Student Scholarship Programs provide up to $2,000 each, to be used toward visiting student elective fees, transportation costs and lodging. 


Eligibility

Eligible participants are full-time, fourth-year medical students in good standing at accredited U.S. medical schools. Students remain registered at their schools while participating in the four-week elective at UC San Diego.

Each student must also apply for eligible Department of Pediatric clerkship rotations through the American Association of Medical Colleges' Visiting Student Learning Opportunity (VSLO)'s Online Application . For more information, please visit the UCSD's Visiting Student webpage .

Selection

The scholarship applications are reviewed on a rolling basis between April- December.

Disadvantaged Backgrounds and/or Underserved Populations

The Visiting Elective Scholarship (VESP) Program provides support for 4th-year students who are interested in working with underserved populations and/or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The scholarship program provides up to $2,000 and is designed to:

  • Expose 4th-year medical students who are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or interested in working with underserved populations to an academic training program.
  • Promote student interest in applying to an academic residency training program
  • Provide faculty and housestaff mentorship during the clinical elective experience
Accepted participants are assigned a faculty advisor and have the opportunity to network with UCSD faculty, housestaff, and students. Students will also participate in community experiences that expose them to the cultural richness and diversity that exists in the San Diego community.  In addition, all participants are invited and encouraged to attend various seminars and lectures including those offered by the Pediatrics Master Clinician Program, UCSD Office of Diversity and Community Partnerships and the UCSD Cross Cultural Center.
At the moment, eligible Department of Pediatric visiting student rotations include sub-Internships in Academic General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, Allergy-Immunology, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Respiratory Medicine.

Selection 

Scholarships (up to $2,000 each*, to be used toward visiting student elective fees, transportation costs and lodging) will be awarded based on:
  • Interest in pursuing a career in academic medicine
  • Interest in working with underserved populations
  • Leadership 
  • Community Service 
  • Academic achievement as indicated by transcripts and letter of recommendation.
Funds are awarded upon completion of the elective. Receipts must be submitted for reimbursement.

PHYSICIAN/SCIENTIST SCHOLARSHIP 

The Physician/Scientist Scholarship Program provides support for fourth-year students who are interested in pursuing academic careers with a research emphasis. The scholarship program provides up to $2,000 and is designed to:

  • Promote and encourage scientific investigation during physician training
  • Pair clinical experiences with an overview of lab/research opportunities

Accepted participants are assigned a faculty advisor and have the opportunity to network with UCSD faculty, housestaff, and students. 

At the moment, eligible Department of Pediatric visiting student rotations include sub-Internships in Pediatric Allergy/Immunology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology, and Pediatric Respiratory Medicine.

UNDERSERVED PEDIATRICS SUBSPECIALTIES 

The Underserved Pediatric Subspecialties Scholarship Program provides support for fourth-year students who are interested in pursuing careers in pediatric subspecialties with projected shortages in the future workforce. The scholarship program provides up to $2,000 and is designed to provide exposure to clinical experiences and fellowship opportunities at UCSD.  Accepted participants are assigned a faculty advisor and have the opportunity to network with UCSD faculty, housestaff, and students.

At the moment, eligible Department of Pediatric visiting student rotations include sub-Internships in Adolescent Medicine, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Respiratory Medicine.
