The Kawasaki Disease Clinic at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego is dedicated to caring for kids with acute Kawasaki disease. The Children’s Kawasaki Disease Clinic follows the health status of more than 1,300 children with the disease in San Diego. At Rady Children’s, 80 to 90 new patients with Kawasaki disease are treated each year by healthcare professionals.
The Clinic is directed by Jane Burns, M.D., the inaugural appointee of the Gordon and Marilyn Macklin Foundation Endowed Chair in Kawasaki Disease Care and Research, in recognition of Brooke Dawn, a survivor. Dr. Jane Burns is internationally known for her research on the disease. In 2010, she received the Pioneer Award for Kawasaki Disease Research from the Kawasaki Disease Foundation. Dr. Burns, along with Adriana Tremoulet, M.D., M.A.S., specializes in the treatment of Kawasaki disease and provides expert care.
As long-term complications may result from Kawasaki disease, such as damage to the coronary arteries, and other heart problems and complications, healthcare professionals at the Clinic see patients periodically to check their hearts. This is done at the Kawasaki disease clinic using highly advanced, non-invasive imaging technology, such as low-radiation CT (computerized tomography).
