Former Postdoc Fellows and PhD Students in Full Time Academic Positions
Several Postdoctoral Fellows and PhD student who trained in the laboratory have gone on two tenure-track faculty positions at leading universities and research institutes across the U.S. and internationally, a number well-established at the Full Professor level. Each of these former lab members is performing extramurally-funded research, pushing scientific frontiers, and mentoring the next generation of biomedical professionals in their own innovative lines of investigation.
San Diego, and in particular, the La Jolla Mesa surrounding our university, is by any measure one of the world’s most dynamic biotechnology and biopharmaceutical innovation hubs. Thus many young scientists are drawn to the area for advanced doctoral or postdoctoral training to t launch a career as an innovation leader in the biotech/biopharma sector. This has indeed been the case for many former laboratory trainees who have pursued careers at some of the finest companies both locally and across the globe.
Beyond the PhD students and postdoctoral scholars highlighted above, the laboratory has been a training and collaborative venue for many additional scholars who spend extended periods conducting research studies advancing knowledge in bacterial pathogenesis, innate immunity, and infectious disease therapeutics. These include student completing the Master’s degree in the UC San Diego Integrated BS/MS Program, Visiting Foreign Master’s or Doctoral students performing international research externships, PhD students for whom I was a former co-thesis advisor, Clinical Fellows whose ultimate career has been primarily in the patient care arena, Staff Research Associates (Technicians), and Sabbatical Professors from other Universities.
